SAN DIEGO — If you’ve discovered that an employee is embezzling funds from your company, do you know how to report it to police? Investigators will want all kinds of details about your company, your suspect and how and when the money was taken.

The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office Economic Crimes Division has created a guide to reporting embezzlement, to make it easier for police and prosecutors to know if they have a viable theft or fraud case against the suspect.

The guide includes videos and a checklist of documents investigators will want — such as cashed checks, credit card statements, cash withdrawal records — as well as payroll and financial records. Prosecutors suggest that all the papers be assembled into a three-ring binder with a table of contents, then given to the police investigator.

In announcing the creation of the checklist and forms, District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement: “To pursue justice in these cases, we rely heavily on the victims’ ability to provide sufficient documentation and we hope that this new webpage will serve as a step-by-step guide.”

According to the statement, the District Attorney’s Office has filed more than 100 felony cases of embezzlement over the past year, but prosecutors believe many more potential cases go unreported because the owners aren’t sure how to proceed.

Prosecutors said they had one case of an employee who arranged for an extra paycheck deposit every week for a year. In another case, an employee who approved credit card expenses ran up a tab for $150,000 on the company credit card, paying for her child’s college tuition and orthodontia work.
