Officers impounded 24 vehicles and issued more than 70 citations Thursday night at “sideshows” throughout Stockton as local and state authorities worked together to curb the illegal car stunt demonstrations.

Calls from area residents helped authorities find the sideshows, according to a Facebook post Friday night from the Stockton Police Department.

Members of the San Joaquin County Sideshow Task Force and officers from the department’s Field Operations Division found the sideshows and detained people in the area. California Highway Patrol officers and San Joaquin County Sheriff’s deputies assisted in the enforcement operation.

In the Facebook post, Stockton police reminded residents that sideshows are illegal “and have cost the lives of numerous people each year.”

Last year, one person was hospitalized as vehicles fled a sideshow in the Pocket area, Sacramento police officials have said. Two people were arrested in January 2019 after a large sideshow demonstration of about 200 vehicles led the CHP and Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies to chase participants in North Highlands and North Sacramento.

Sideshows in the Stockton area can be reported confidentially by calling Stockton Crime Stoppers at 209-946-0600. Residents also can submit a tip online on the Stockton police website at: or the app
